This paper examines the behavior of the great powers in relation to international politics revolving the conflict in Syria, and the lack of action by the UN Security Council and the reasons behind the lack of resolution concerning Syria. The problem is the United States inability to adopt resolution S/2012/538 in the UN Security Council concerning the war in Syria. Our hypothesis suggests that the great powers act out of self-interest and therefore makes the implementation of an resolution impossible, and only meets the interests of one side. The empirical data will help identify the states’ interests in Syria. The theories used will explain the behavior of states in the international system. The empirical data and theories are then merged to analyze why the United States, China and Russia have interests in Syria. This paper’s results have been discussed, validated and the quality assured to understand the applicability and limitations of the gathered knowledge. It is concluded that there is a clear reason for why a resolution on intervention in Syria has not been adopted, leaving us to conclude that the states are acting outside their own interests, to increase their power as much as possible.
