This paper will examine the concept of the soul based on Aristotle’s De Anima. The paper will primarily focus on Aristotle’s own interpretation of the soul, which will mostly be derived from the third book of De Anima. The purpose of this examination is to establish how Aristotle’s interpretation of the soul has been read and interpreted throughout time. Specifically, the medieval period in Europe and the modern period we live in today. To do this, the paper uses medieval philosopher and theologist St. Thomas Aquinas and current Danish philosopher Ole Thyssen to examine their respective time periods.
The paper concludes that the soul as a term no longer has the same meaning. The psychological term conscience seems to have taken over many of the capacities which were formerly regarded as part of the soul due to the involvement of modern science.
