Being part of a democratic society we - as individuals - have reflected on the way our democratic society in Denmark has developed. This reflection has been the cause of our main focus, due to the fact that we personally have experienced a negative development within the trust of the democracy in practice. Here we have found a similar perception of how democracy should be, in Hal Koch’s book Hvad er demokrati?, thus he will serve the purpose as a premise for the problem in this report. With this report we strive to describe and illuminate the different matters within this problem. Our main focus has been how, we as researchers, can approach this problem and not the actual outcome of our research. Therefore we have thought it necessary to describe different methods of the science of humanities including both quantitative and qualitative researches and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods. To emphasize; the main focus of this report will be a methodological discussion. First we establish a common understanding of democratic culture in this report, we have chosen to define democratic culture by the theorists Almond & Verba’s definition of political culture, and this has been the theoretical foundation of our report. We have chosen that the research by the professor in sociology, Peter Gundelach, represent the quantitative method since he has done extensive research on the mindsets and values regarding different aspects of everyday life amongst the Danish citizens between 1981-2008. This research shows that the majority of citizens are content. To challenge this research methodologically and to illuminate this problem in an alternative way we have chosen to execute our own focus group interview. The interview demonstrates a qualitative method. In our discussion between these two methodological approaches we have found that the chosen methodological approach on our research field defines the outcome. In our qualitative approach, which we have analyzed discourse theoretically the participants express a negative attitude towards our democracy. Hereby we can conclude that the scientific approach to such research field will have extensive impact on the results, but also on the conclusions we can draw from these.
