Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

What is democracy today? We all know the history of democracy. How it started only containing a small group of people with the possibility to vote and how the development, of democracy, ended up containing (almost) all the citizen within the nation. One would say: by now in history of democracy, democracy has been a matter of self-determination for states or nations.
The new challenge which we are facing today is the development towards a more globalized world. And the question now is would it be possible for democracy to leave the national sphere in favor of the global world?
In this assignment we have found some arguments “pro et contra” for democracy in a cosmopolitan world, which leads us to another question. What influence does this globalization have on us as human beings? Can, or should we take decisions which has an influence on other nations way of living? According to Brexit the answer here would be no but then again, Brexit could also be the first sign of the limitation of democracy in a global world.
In the light of these questions we have to ask ourselves. What role will democracy play in a global world if any? In order to require knowledge about these questions we employed two kinds of philosophies view on cosmopolitism vs. nationalism. represented by Seyla Benhabib and David Miller.
Keywords: Democracy, nations, cosmopolitan, responsibility, Brexit, citizenship, Turkey and EU.
