The purpose of this paper is to analyse the representation of migrants and refugees in the media, and to look for the dehumanisation of which they are victims.
The analysis is based on three widespread, progressive news outlets, namely the German newspaper Zeit Online, the Italian newspaper Repubblica.it and the pan-Arabic diaspora newspaper Al Quds Al Arabi. We decided to focus our attention on the time period following the big boat wreck of the 3rd of October 2013 since it played a relevant role both in the public opinion and in the European policies.
The project is shaped on the theories of representation by Stuart Hall, which lead to the construction of identity, to the process of othering and to the use of binary oppositions and stereotypes.
We used a theoretical approach to analyse the three different news sources, and we subsequently highlighted the considerable difference that exists between the two European online newspapers and Al Quds Al Arabi.
The difference shows itself mainly in the way the newspapers are representing the refugee and migrant and in the way they are representing Europe.
After the comparative analysis, the paper closes with a reflection on our conclusions and opens new possible developments of our study.
