Abstrakt

The substructure of this project is an earlier report of mine about the interaction amongst users on a Danish newspaper’s Facebook page. In the report I find that the basis of site activity rests on the dual roles that users on Facebook engage in, acting as both producers and users of content. This leads to a change in the way news can be perceived, spread and mediated, especially since a core of very active users, called hyper users, often are agents of major influence in the comment sections. An influential position is based on a top two placement in the comment section, which is primarily a result of the number of likes and answers on a particular comment. Drawing from these hyper users’ digital footprints, I investigate in this report whether hyper users take on agenda setting roles on the Facebook pages of several Danish newspapers. Tendencies, such as how hyper users comment and how general comment sections evolve, are investigated. 2½ days of posts from four major newspaper's Facebook pages are gathered and analyzed to find out how often hyper users reach top positions in the comment sections and how users in general act in those specific cases. Subsequently, it is discussed if the presence of Danish newspapers on Facebook has reshaped mediated debates and the distribution of news and whether it has lead to a change in the way opinions are shaped in the broad public. It is concluded that hyper users possess a strong agenda setting role on Danish newspapers’ Facebook pages, based on their understanding and personal take on news, which, to a great extent, influence the conceptual framework of news stories of a large number of users.
