This project investigates how four public individuals in Danish society construct their persona on their social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The four public individuals includes pshychologist Svend Brinkmann, debater and online activist Emma Holten, journalist Abdel Aziz Mahmoud and journalist Ditte Giese. These four figures are from our point of view defined as ‘mediaintellectuals’. This term is based upon Edward Said and Peter Dahlgren’s characterization.
The project will contain a description on how the four public figures can be seen as mediaintellectuals. Based on David Marshall and Joshua Meyrowitz’ theories the analysis seeks to examine how the four mediaintellectuals construct their online identities through the promotion of their professional opinions and their behaviour on the social media platforms. Furthermore how they oscillate between a public identity and their private selves on social media.
The analysis will mainly include the terms public self, public private self, forefront, middle region and deepback. The analysis takes the changes in behavior depending on the type of media platform into consideration. Based on the analysis of each persons strategy the discussion reflects upon the ways in which the four mediaintellectuals establish authentic online identities. Gunn Enli’s theory regarding mediated authenticity is used as the foundation of this discussion including terms as self-disclosure, genre conventions and support from networks.
The project concludes that the four individuals have different strategies on social media. In sharing content the four individuals differ from each other in use of private information in the promotion of a public self. Although the individuals strategy varies they manage to appear authentic by either dragging on support from networks and/or sticking to specific genres. Also, the mediaintellectuals establish and maintain an authentic appearance by sharing personal information through self-disclosure. This way the user can create a connection between him-/herself and the followers. Furthermore the project concludes that in the process of creating an authentic public persona, the use of intercommunication plays an important role.
