This project focuses on news stories from Facebook and Instagram written by the Danish online newspapers bt.dk and eb.dk. The project examines the type of stories that originate from these two social media platforms, as well as the journalistic challenges and reflections associated with these stories. To answer this we coded 103 articles from bt.dk and eb.dk in order to identify the themes and the use of sources in the stories published on Facebook and Instagram.
The coding shows that stories from Facebook often originate from what we have chosen to call ‘common users’. Stories from Instagram originate from professional sources such as politicians and celebrities. Our coding shows that professional sources are rarely interviewed. Mostly the journalists quote from their social media posts. ‘The common user’ is interviewed more often.
We interviewed four journalists and two editors for our analysis in order to examine the considerations and challenges that are connected to working with stories from Facebook and Instagram. The interviews also aim at clarifying the reasons behind the limited amount and use of sources in our chosen stories.
Our study shows that the journalists compromise when it comes to source criticism especially in the stories that involve professional sources.
The journalists explain that these sources are rarely accessible and the journalists experience the professional sources’ social media platforms as a news channel that contains press releases. The journalists trust what the professional sources express, and the journalists explain the lack of interviews with the fact that their daily working routines are challenged by a limited amount of time to work with each article, because they work with online news platforms. This means that new stories must be produced continuously and at the same time they are competing with other media sites.
With stories from foreign countries there is a big risk taken by the journalists who quote from and trust the foreign media. In stories with ‘the common user’ practicing source criticism is a high priority for the journalists and the source is assessed by the journalistic gut feeling.
Social media has brought the journalists closer to the personal stories but further away from the source because especially professional sources have more control over what and when they choose to share.
