This assignment seeks to determine the technical aspects of internet cookies as a technological system and examine in what ways cookies influence life in the modern society. The material to make this assignment has been obtained by observations online, where we with the anonymous browser Tor were able to see different prices on airline tickets with the same computer. To describe the structures of society and the technological development, our empirical literature have been chosen from the theories of Anthony Giddens and Ulrich Beck whose theories deal with the technological developments in western society and the late modernity. Cookies are descripted and categorised into five types and furthermore we describe the technological developments of cookies from an advertising oriented point of view. To support the empirical literature of this assignment and get an insight in the users understanding of cookies we have chosen to make a focus group interview, wherein questions about privacy data, advertising, online surveillance and basic knowledge of cookies and the cookie policies could be discussed. Lastly we’ve made an interview with Lector of Computer Science, Niels Christian Juul to get insight in the world of cookies through an expert and furthermore to support our own obtained material. We’ve been able to conclude that it is not within cookies itself that the problem lies, but in the way technology is used and the people behind controlling the data. Cookies therefore could go on to disappear, but data broking would still continue because of the financial aspect of marketing.
