City of Glass, the Graphic Novel: an Intersemiotic Translation

Jon Ask Jacobsen

Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

This project analyses the graphic novel based on Paul Auster’s "City of Glass" as an intersemiotic translation. Finding that the micro strategies suggested by more conventional translation studies are incapable of describing an intersemiotic translation, the project suggests a different way to conceptualize the translation between the monosemiotic literary novel and the polysemiotic graphic novel. This approach is based on Scott McCloud’s comic book theory and is used to analyse the graphic novel as a literary translation, arguing that though much is lost, and though intersemiotic translations of this type faces different problems from interlingual literary translations, the translators mostly manage to balance form and content in a way that illustrates the potential of the graphic medium while making a decent literary translation.
