With an impetus in theory of transition studies, this project seeks to further the
understanding of the inherent nature of the process of planning for a circular economy in
This is done by an examination of the various rationales behind the process, after which a
deconstruction of the relevant elements in the sociotechnical configuration of the planning
regime is carried out.
In doing so, several aspects pertaining to the sociopolitical landscape as well as the
infrastructure of the European waste- and recycling systems are identified. This external
pressure presents an opening for the further development of sustainable transitions.
The analysis concludes in an analytical discussion of the symbiotic roles of the public and
private sector, where the potential in the collaboration between both parties constitutes the
grounds for a further evaluation of the implementation of more binding measures to foster
