Studenteropgave: Speciale

This dissertation analyses the project ‘Neighborhood Mothers’, originally supported by the Ministry of Integration. The purpose of the project is to teach women with other ethnicities than Danish important aspects of life in Denmark. Fx. the women learn about Danish institutions, social conditions, upbringing, job searching and medical care, so they can pass the knowledge on to other women in their local community, and by that giving them better possibilities for integration into the Danish society. Also the project hopes for the ‘Neighborhood Mothers’ to create new networks with the women. Through conversation and by building bridges, the ‘Neighborhood Mothers’ are supposed to create relations to these women. Even though the project has been successful, this dissertation shows that it can be highly improved by having a more varied perception of the ethnic women. The analytical perspective in this dissertation is based on practice theory. Practice theory is a synthesis of elements in existing sociological theories, for example Pierre Bourdieu, Anthony Giddens and others to whom the theoretical focus are on social practice. In this dissertation the theoretical basis consists of parts of the work of Andreas Reckwitz and Theodore Schatzki. Practice theory is shortly told a way of analyzing social life and practices, by focusing on practice itself. From this practice theoretical perspective the practice of ‘Neighborhood Mothers’ is analyzed. It will be done by finding the limits and boundaries of the practice by interviewing and observing different ‘Neighborhood Mothers’ during their education process and during their daily work as ‘Neighborhood Mothers’. The aim is to identify the parts of the existing practices and the practice of ‘Neighborhood Mothers’ that substantiate the desired changes for the area and the women and the ones that hinder new practices. The focus is also on the women who are the target group for this project. The change intends to give the women new habits and behaviors. In the end of the dissertation some ideal-types will be presented that introduces a new and more varied way of perceiving the target group. Instead of the old focus on the target group as unknowing, socially isolated and marginalized, the practice theory perspective focuses on the practices that the target group is part of in everyday life. I argue, that this perspective targets the communication effort and has the potential to improve project ‘Neighborhood Mothers’ in the future
