Abstrakt

This report will examine how the scienti c term biodiversity can be used as a tool for evaluation of an ecosystems status. The work is based on three scienti c articles representing studies of the conditions in Danish lakes. A set of criteria, based on the articles is outlined and used in the studies of the conditions of the ecosystems. With a focus on these criteria, three conveying articles concerning the nature in Denmark are examined. It is evaluated how the term biodiversity can describe the conditions of an ecosystem. Using the term biodiversity in regulation of an ecosystem demands a set of criteria for the measurements. These consist of a de nition of choice of physical demarcation, classi cation, indicators, quanti cation and time. Here the time frame and the choice of species can be highlighted as important. It is concluded that the term biodiversity should not stand alone when used for the evaluation of an ecosystem. The measurements of biodiversity in the ecosystem do not describe the condition of the ecosystem, but with additional studies it can be used as an indicator.
