This study explores how and why citizens actively mobilize and get involved in shaping the city. It approaches this topic by examining what is understood by Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Urbanism and the role it plays for the citizens in reclaiming the city. DIY urbanism is a broad term which, in short, can be defined as citizen-led, urbane, micro-spatial practices often unauthorized and temporary and with a character of being functional, creative, political, and socially orientated. By reviewing the research literature on the subject DIY urbanism, and by use of qualitative methods interviews and case studies, the project presents a broader understanding of the field. As DIY urbanism is a broad term and covers a range of different practices, it is structured into four typologies, a pragmatic-, avant-gardist-, radical- and authorized DIY urbanism.
In order to understand why citizens are actively involved in urban DIY practices and the potential it has, the project builds on two theoretical views. Firstly, the project draws on the theoretical field of right to the city by former urban scholar Peter Marcuse to understand why citizens are expressing themselves through do-it-yourself practices. Secondly, the project builds on the theoretical field of empowerment by the urban scholar and sociologist John Andersen to understand the social and political potentials in DIY urbanism and thereby which role DIY urbanism occupies for citizens in shaping the city.
To support the argument, three cases are presented. These cases show how DIY urbanism is utilized in practice in different urban development projects, and how it plays a central role.
The study concludes that DIY urbanism is a way for citizens to actively change the city into their desired vision, either by showing dissatisfaction with the political system, elucidating poor urban conditions, creating a more aesthetic atmosphere, creating more creative and social activity in the city, or challenging the intended use of space. Additionally, the study shows that these practices are ways in which the citizens empower themselves both on a horizontal and vertical level.
