This paper investigates the personality disorder, borderline, whether the psychoanalysis can con-tribute to this disorder and the difference between a patient with borderline and a youngster in the process of finding one’s identity. In order to do this we have made an account for personality in general and personality disorder using Otto Kernberg’s theory about object relations. To answer whether Sigmund Freud’s and Anna Freud’s theories about the development of neurosis can con-tribute to the understanding of the borderline diagnosis, we have made an account for Sigmund Freud’s theory about the development of personality and Anna Freud’s theory about defense mech-anisms. Furthermore we have included Thomas Ziehe’s theories upon what he defines as the youth in the second modernization phase. In order to get a better understanding of borderline, we decided to do a phenomenological qualitative interview with a 37 year old man named Daniel with the diag-nosis borderline and worked through a condensation of meaning to develop an analysis of him using Otto Kernberg’s, Sigmund Freud’s and Anna Freud’s theories. Doing this we have concluded that Anna Freud and Sigmund Freud can contribute to the personality disorder borderline and that Dan-iel makes use of Kernberg’s mature, neurotic and primitive defense mechanisms and psychopatho-logical aggression. After doing an analysis of Daniel we worked out a discussion based on theory of science through a humanistic understanding. Furthermore we have made a discussion comparing Kernberg’s understanding of borderline and Ziehe’s account of youngsters in the second moderniza-tion phase. Based on these discussions we have concluded that there will always be a different un-derstanding of a field of research based on which theory one uses and the fact that we have chosen these theorists means that we see the world and our empirical data a certain way. Furthermore we have concluded that there is a context between borderline and the tendencies Ziehe describes about young people in the second modernization, since one of the symptoms of borderline is that they do not have a sense of an inner core and change their beliefs depending on their milieu just as young-sters today have difficulties finding their identity, since they are liberated from their affiliation and thus do not have a solid basis.
