Today, the popularity of outdoor position systems (OPS), such as GPS is tremendous. This system is being used to position smartphones outdoors. Unfortunately, this technology will not work in indoor areas. Having an indoor position system that takes over the estimation of a mobile device`s position when it is moving from outdoors to inside a building in which the GPS signal is poor or unavailable could be very beneficial in many different contexts. In hospitals when tracking patients, in airports when passengers arrive and need to check in, find the correct gate or their luggage, or in malls when a customer is searching for a store etc. There are many different technologies and methods existing today that could be useful for an indoor positioning solution. Nevertheless, at the present time there is not a specified method for an indoor position that has been approved, therefore this kind of systems are not nearly as available as those utilized for the outdoor position.
The main point of this thesis was to present the idea of indoor position and demonstrate how mobile devices can be utilized for this purpose. In order to do this, an Android application for measuring the position of a mobile device inside a closed area was developed. This application relies on signal readings and data collected from Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons, as well as sensors built into a smartphone to function. The application is also capable of connecting to outdoor position systems, and thereby, provide a seamless transition from OPS to IPS.
