Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project attempts to enlighten the question regarding consciousness in artificial intelligence (AI), according to two philosophers, namely John Rogers Searle and David John Chalmers. For the task of obtaining consciousness this project has focused on the connectionist multilayered artificial neural networks. The basic functionality and some learning algorithms will be explained in this project. The philosophers have two somewhat different points, where Chalmers is skeptical towards a premis from one of Searles arguments saying that a programme is insufficient for consciousness. The argument stems from Searles thought-experiment ‘the chinese room’. Chalmers then continues with connectionism and explains that it has two levels, one following syntax, and one higher semantic level which emerges from the syntactic level. The conclusion of the project is that we cannot give a final definition on consciousness, and that whatever it may be, it will most likely be obtainable by the connectionist models.
