ABSTRACT: IS IT POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF EVIL?
In this project, we will investigate the concept of: evil.
This topic is a widely discussed phenomenon, which has not yet been clearly defined in relation to human beings. Is evil something within human nature, are we born evil or is it our environment that influences us to become evil?
We have drawn on psychological theories to look at the earliest years of Breivik’s life.
This has given us an understanding of how the environment can be an influence to the choices we make.
We have also used philosophical theories in order to understand Breivik as an adult but also to investigate his action and the motives behind his terror attack.
The result of our project is that we have not been able to find one single cause that made Breivik evil. Breivik may have become evil because of the bad relationship to his mother. This motivated him to choose paths that were in opposition to her. These paths led to right-wing groups who had a great influence on Breivik’s mindset. Breivik adopted their violent right-wing ideology. With this ideology, he dehumanized his victims and tried to justify his terror attack. Breivik is an example of one kind of evilness, but we can’t conclude for sure if it was his environment or his inborn nature, which had the biggest negative influence on him.
