This project’s focus will be nuclear power, and the role it potentially has within the Nordic energy system, towards 2050. The empirical information is based on academic literature and web-based research, supplemented with conducted expert interviews. The project’s choices of theoretical approaches include technology assessment, to assess the pros and cons with nuclear power in relation to sustainable energy choices, and sustainable energy system regarding figuring out if nuclear power could have a role in such a system. Furthermore, nuclear power will be analyzed in conjunction with a hypothetical scenario towards 2050, wherein high expectation to energy consumption reductions are in effect within the Nordic countries. This is done to figure out what role nuclear power might have, in the assumed future within these countries. Finally, the generation 4 model, known as the Molten Salt Reactor, will be analyzed based on the aforementioned interviews, in order to get a perspective on the potential future of nuclear power. The project is finalized by a conclusion based on all the analysis, pertaining the results of this project. The project’s conclusion is that nuclear power is a viable option, however circumstances makes it undesirable for implementation in the Nordic countries.
