Abstract The subject of this master thesis is about the positioning strategies, which are present in the meeting between transgenders and the binary gender system. Gender is defined already before we are born by help of fetal scanning, and is categorized from either a sign or a body part, which tells whether we are to be born as a girl or a boy. This thesis looks at the different ways of existing within the designation “doing gender” and which expectations there are in relation to how transgenders choose to perform their gender and sexuality. In addition it is investigated which positioning strategies are present in the meeting between transgenders and ”Sexologisk Klinik” (in Denmark), which is one of the contextual situations transgenders encounter, when they want to have hormone treatment and transit to another sexual expression. The thesis is based upon six qualitative interviews with transgenders aged 23-47 years. The theory of science used in this thesis is within the subject fields of post-structuralism with queer theory as the main field. The theoretical and analytical framework of the thesis is inspired by Bronwyn Davies and Rom Harré’s concept of positioning, where ways of looking at people’s identity and how the social life is played, is in focus. In addition is the American gender theorist, Judith Butler’s concept of the gender performativity used to investigate how gender is done in a nuanced trans-perspective. The thesis has a deconstructive approach to gender and sexuality in order to make it possible to investigate sexual hierarchies and sexual diversity within the heterosexual gender norms. Thus the thesis gives a suggestion on how gender also may be done. Gender and sexuality do not necessarily need to follow the normative gender roles, which demanded by the binary gender system. The conclusion of the thesis is that gender may be performed in a diversity of ways and that gender may be just as skewed as it can be binary. However, the gender understanding in Denmark is still not that articulated, (that is) why there is not a sufficiently broad discourse to embrace the persons defining themselves outside the binary gender system.
