In this thesis we focus on how prison staff can improve their communication skills when educating the inmates. We use the state prison of Møgelkær as a case study. In this prison the staff has created a System for Guidance and Clarification of Competences (named VOKS), which seeks to increase the number of inmates getting an education whilst serving their sentence. Based on qualitative interviews with inmates and staff plus observations in the prison, we examine how the staff can implement a practise of communicating that results in an increased number of young inmates starting on an education. We use three different theoretical approaches for analysing our empirical data. Based on the practice theoretical perspective we show that the education-oriented practices of Møgelkær are characterized by interpersonal communication based on the individual inmate, seeking the meaningfulness within his context. This approach works well in relation to the young inmates as they feel they are taken seriously and met in their situation. Based on the performance theoretical perspective we show that the social categories inmate, young, ethnicity and gender are crucial in the prison. The valuation of these categories by inmates and staff plays a key role in the communication within education and in the understanding of the target group. Based on the resource oriented perspective we show that the inmates of Møgelkær fundamentally agree that education is of the utmost importance, though many of them have had bad experiences from their time in school. At the same time many of the inmates are still attracted to a criminal lifestyle and the advantages that follow like status and money. However, the younger inmates are tired of the personal costs incurred by leading a life of crime. This is important knowledge in relation to the content of the communication from staff to inmates. We compare the results from our three analytical parts to our understanding of communication. Based on this we recommend for the staff to continue their work on examining what makes sense for the inmates. However, in getting the young inmates to start taking an education, it is important, that the staff actively use this knowledge in their communication and focus on what makes sense for the individual inmate. In addition, we recommend that the staff create an additional communication practice where they involve the elder or former inmates as communicators in order to overcome some of the barriers in the existing communication. Finally, in our thesis we give some suggestions as to how staff in the future should work with education – orientated communication towards the younger inmates.
