Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

The following report will evolve around the theme of stress. Our focus will be the work conditions for midwives based on the empirical data compiled by our interviews and an observation at the maternity ward at Nordsjællands Hospital in Hillerød. The academics of this report will be centered around the psychological theory by Richard S. Lazarus combined with other relevant theories regarding psychology, stress and the work conditions of the post-modernity. The purpose of this report is to examine the coherence between midwives’ working conditions and the risk of experiencing stress and how the potential strained situations is assessed by the staff at the maternity ward. The interviews with the two midwives and the deputy head of the department combined with the observation has given an insight into the midwives way of coping with stress related situations in their professional life. This information has provided essential knowledge about the personal experience of potential stress and furthermore our study has shown that the appraisal is important when evaluating the situations leading to potential stress. Appraisal was the key circumstance to how or if each of the interviewed midwives managed to cope. The appraisal seemed to be vital for the thrive and whether or not the midwives experienced stress.
