Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project wishes to explain why people perform acts which would normally go against their own morals. The project will examine the “Bad Barrel” theory by Dr. Philip Zimbardo in relation to the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal. The theory will be extracted from Dr. Zimbardo’s own book called “The Lucifer Effect” and there will be an account of the 6 days of the “Stanford Prison Experiment”, on which the theory is based. To relate it to Abu Ghraib and the abuses, there will be a profile of the most important people. Finally there will be made use of the article “Contesting the “Nature” of Conformity” by Haslam and Reicher, to question and criticize the theory of Dr. Zimbardo. The project will conclude that the “Bad Barrel” theory is a stepping stone towards explaining why people turn towards malignant behavior, but there are other factors to be taken into account.
