This project aims to provide a definition of the antijoke. This definition is achieved through a structuralist linguistic discipline. Thus we want to develop a theory of the nature and structure of the antijoke by examining the linguistic units and mechanisms, which the antijoke consist of and which creates its meaning. In concrete terms, initially we conduct an emic analysis, wherein the antijoke is viewed from the same perspective as that group of people who uses and has cultural knowledge about the phenomenon. This analysis results in an initial definition of the antijoke. Secondly, we will put this definition in relation to the etical descriptions of the antijoke, respectively the description by Paul Lewis in the field of humour, the description by Steven Nashman in the field of anthropology, and the description by John Henderson in the field of antiquity. Since we want to examine the antijoke as a linguistic, humorous genre, as well as analysing specific antijokes, we have accounted for the linguistic-philosophical theories of humour, the superiority-, the relief- and the incongruity theory, as well as the newer linguistic theory of jokes by Ole Togeby. These theories are used to analyze specific antijokes. This analysis leads towards creating a typology of parameters, which antijokes operates within and thereby are able to differ at.
Throughout the project we have been able to conclude that the antijoke is a genre of humour, which achieves its humourous function by preliminary imitating elements of a joke, and thereby the anticlimactic, serious and logical punchline surprises. For this reason the laugh occurs due to the misplaced seriousness and the lack of a humorous twist, which was set up to be expected. Therefore the emotions and expectations firstly attached to the antijoke becomes redundant and results in a laugh of impotence. Finally antijokes can be subdivided by the fact that they can have different degrees of logic in the connections between the opening and the punchline, different degrees of clarity in joke imitation, different degrees of importance of the subject, and different degrees of having something at stake.
