Animerede Traumer i Waltz with Bashir: "...a cool war movie with beautiful drawings"

Abstrakt

In this project we examine the relation between documentary and animation in Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir (2008). The project presents an approach to the animation in the film that set out to examine its qualities. With documentary expert Bill Nichols and researcher of animated documentary Annabelle Honess Roe as a theoretical frame of reference, we will analyze how the documentary works in a performative mode, depicting a subjective experience through animation. The aim and object of Waltz with Bashir is the subjective telling of Ari Folman’s therapeutic project. To examine what qualities animation and aesthetic portrayal in general holds in depicting a narrative of a personal catastrophe we investigate an understanding of the subject in Waltz with Bashir – the simultaneous necessity and impossibility of addressing the trauma. In dealing with the visual portrayal of Ari Folman and the interviewees subjective experience of trauma, professor in literature and trauma Cathy Caruths insights into the strange language of trauma is presented. In making the subject unfamiliar with itself, traumas most prominent consequence might be the unavoidable gap it creates in relation to the historical reality of the traumatic event. Waltz with Bashir depicts Ari Folman’s absence of knowing and a complex relation to what it means not to know. In the task of linking animation to a depiction of this experience, the account of professor in popular culture and literature John G. Cawelti’s approach to stories dealing with alien beings or states is additionally included. Last but not least, we discuss the last scene of Waltz with Bashir where horrifying live-action footage appear and investigate the problems brought forth by this change in indexicality. The live-action footage in Waltz with Bashir is synonymous with Ari Folman’s externalisation of the traumatic remembrance of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in which he participated. Therefore the narrative of Waltz with Bashir culminates in a cathartic revelation of the traumas intrinsic strangeness. But as we further discuss and thus conclude the introduction of live-action is an acknowledgment of a ‘lack of indexicality’ in the media of animation. The efficacy of animation hence stems from the sensuous and subjective approach to representation rather than an indexical relation to reality.
