Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This study examines what kind of recognition occurs on social media, and what significance it has on one's self-relationship. The study accounts for the use of social media in today’s world, amongst young people and the impact of it. Furthermore we will account for the German philosopher Axel Honneth and his theory on recognition, which also involves the two theorists and sociologist George Mead and George Hegel. We will then conduct an auto-ethnographic experiment concerning ourselves as subjects. In this experiment we will be absent from social media and write journal entries throughout the week. In the journals we will write about how this experiment impacts us and our thoughts regarding recognition and how we have achieved recognition otherwise that week. The theory behind the experiment is the micro analytical interview by Daniel N. Stern, from his book “The Present Moment in psychotherapy and everyday life”. In the analysis we will apply Honneths concepts of recognition onto our collected empirical data. We do this to draw comparisons between the uses of social media and the theory of recognition. As part of our analysis we have looked at additional material, to help us get a different perspective on our study. We have used the article “Medier er adgangsbillet til sociale fællesskaber” by Malene Charlotte Larsen to analyze social media with a different point of view. Moreover, we have used the article “Skærmene er med til at ødelægge os” by Imran Rashid, and the documentary “Lægen flytter ind- afhængig - skærm” that includes him as an expert. In addition we have included Donald Winnicot’s theory about mirroring and applied it to our empirical data. In the last part of our analysis we have conducted a discussion of the like-phenomenon, where we discuss its impact on recognition. Furthermore we will conclude to what degree recognition is practiced on social media and what impact it has on one's self-relationship. At last we will assess how social media should be used in the future, and what the best way to do so is, according to our findings about recognition.
