This paper examines what recognition and care is, and how it can be observed in a daycare center, in the relationship between children and adults. To examine recognition and care in a daycare center, it requires a study of how it can be observed methodically in practice in three different kindergartens on Zealand, Denmark.
In attempt to describe recognition and care, this paper uses theoretical perspectives of Axel Honneth, Anne-Lise Løvlie Schibbye and Berit Bae to describe how recognition and care are expressed and can be described based on selected field notes. Recognition and care is an important factor in children's development and everyday life. Nonetheless, it is difficult to define what recognition and care really is, and how it is used in practice. This leads to the interest with this paper, namely to describe how recognition and carrying takes place in a daycare center.
To analyze the role of recognition and care in a daycare center, this paper is based on field descriptions inspired by participant observation method.
This study shows that recognition and care can be expressed in many different ways in the relationship between children and adults. Therefore, five themes are extracted from the field descriptions, concerning how recognition and care were expressed in the three daycare centers. In addition, this study shows how relationships between adults and children are of major importance for the children's everyday lives and self-development.
This paper can elucidate what recognition and care can be and how it takes place and is conducted, in three different daycare centers in Denmark.
