Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

The project has its starting point at a curiosity of how a society creates the best possible positive integration. Five interview contenders has been chosen: from a politician to a refugee. These five has been used in the project as a way of highlighting several society-based problems qua their academic background or experience with the problem of integration. The project is based on a two-part analysis of macro- and micro perspectives, that examines a variety of structural frameworks, which has its basis on Honneth’s theory of recognition. This is examined on a macro level, where the factors: housing politics, the labor market, the legislation, and the discourse potentially hinders the immigrants in their efforts of reaching their emancipatory potential. The second part of the analysis is done in a micro perspective, where Goffman’s theory of stigma has been used as a tool of understanding the immigrants’ possibilities of reaching a successful integration, under the same framework that has been used on the macro analysis. The analysis concludes through its examination of the beforehand mentioned four factors, that all the factors has an influence on the integration and that shortcomings in these four factors contributes to a lesser integration. On the macro level it has been shown that all four factors are present at societal level and on a micro level it has been illustrated how the problems are forming for the individuals. The discussion of the project is grounded, as with the analysis, in Honneth’s theory of recognition and the critical theoretical normative bases of the project. At the same point, Honneths idea that all individuals possess an emancipatory potential, is used in a discussion of the empirical points of views, and the interview contenders understanding of how immigrants reach the best integration and thus become a part of the Danish society. The project concludes that a change in framework is needed for positive integration to happen but acknowledges that this is easier said than done. Apart from strong ties to the labor market it is stressed that other social relations such as ties to local communities and voluntary activities are very important. Furthermore, it is concluded that the economic situation for immigrants and the current political discourse are not compatible with the immigrants achieving recognition in all of Honneths three spheres of recognition
