This project is based on the four criterias of recognizing states, defined by the Montevideoconvention. Based on these criterias, there will be established an account on whether or not Palestine can be referred to as a state. Furthermore this project will contain an analysis based on the theory of institutional liberalism, outlining whether the Montevideoconvention promotes international relations and collaboration. An additional focus in this project will be whether the political division between Hamas and Fatah complicates the Montevideoconvention’s third criteria; an efficiently governed state. The project presents Swedish and Danish statements for and against a recognition of Palestine and will discuss whether or not the political rift between Hamas and Fatah has had an impact on the two states decisions. In addition, an analysis based on small statetheory will provide suggestions of what other political agendas that can explain small states actions internationally.
