In the United States the ongoing presidential race has raised a number of traditional and controversial issues in American politics. The role of money in politics, and linked to this, the role of lobbyism are once again on the agenda. The project starts out asking what role lobbyism and also what role money plays in American politics. It is the argument that money and lobbyism play a significant role, but that this role varies considerably from one policy area to another. It is the main aim of the project to analyze if lobbyism and money affects policy-making and thus the policy outcome in negative ways, i.e. if the policy outcome favors the strong, the rich and the well-organized groups in the American society. In order to scrutinize these issues, the project first analyzes the role of lobbyism within the tobacco-health policy field. Second the project analyzes the role of lobbyism in relation to US policies towards Israel-Palestine, to show a mixed case where money and election politics go hand in hand. The third case is about the policy towards Sudan which is remarkable because neither money nor security play a decisive role when it comes to influencing the policy. Based on these three cases, the project concludes that lobbyism and money definitely plays a significant role in US policy-making. However, the role varies significantly from one policy field to the other. Furthermore, in the field of tobacco-health, money is what apparently makes the difference. In the case of the Jewish lobby it is not only money, but also other factors that play a significant role, it is factors like influence and voting rates that appear to influence policy-making. Opposite to the tobacco industry is the case of the American policy towards Sudan, lobbyism and thus influence is not based on money but on moral and ethics most strongly represented by different types of NGOs, especially the Christian Evangelists groups that are on the rise.
