In this project we will be focusing on the Alzheimer’s disease. The information that will be gathered from this project can be used to help improve and prolong patient’ lives in the future, possibly even removing the Alzheimer’s completely. The project begins with historical research, showing us that; due to the fact that medical technology is prolonging lives the number of elderly is increasing which – in turn – increases the probability of elderly developing Alzheimer’s disease. Secondly, we will discuss the definition of Alzheimer’s disease including the symptoms, diagnosis and the number of patients suffering with this disease. Also, we will discuss what areas of the brain the Alzheimer’s has an effect on as well as how the Alzheimer’s effects these areas. In order for Alzheimer’s patients to control their minds easier and to ‘function properly’, they are medicated with Cholinesterase inhibitor. However, this medication only preserves cognitive functions instead of curing the disease and therefore is only a temporary solution. Donepezil and Galantamine are the most common medication for Alzheimer’s patients as they both contain the cholinesterase inhibitor effect. An alternative for deterring the disease is exercise. Because of this we can use the ADEX data gathered from Denmark who studied how exercise helps Alzheimer’s patients. This is also not a cure and only a deterrent however the exercise has added benefits of giving the patients healthier lives as keeping their cognitive functions active.
