This project is concerned with alternative structures of society. By conducting qualitative interviews with people living in small alternative societies in Denmark, we obtained an insight into their lifeworld. We focus on the newly founded self-sufficient society Grobund in Ebeltoft and the established sustainable society Andelssamfundet i Hjortshøj. Through a philosophic hermeneutic perspective, this paper focuses on the reasons for leaving the bigger society, which advantages, disadvantages and consequences this brings and furthermore how the residents position themselves in relation to the outside world.
The hermeneutic perspective makes it possible to disprove and reconsider one’s prejudices and preunderstanding. As a result the purview, of both the interpreter and the investigated phenomena, melts together. This makes it possible to reach a deeper understanding of the subject. In addition, we will make a hermeneutic interpretation of meaning from the interviews. From this comprehensive reading and in the light of our theory, we are able to discuss to what extent it is a lasting solution to exclude oneself from the bigger society.
