This report deals with alternative refrigerants. The goal of this rapport is to evaluate different gasses, on the basic of their cooling abilities and environmental change effect. The report will explain Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP), these values should be as small as possible for the alternative refrigerants we examine. The report will explain the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, HFC-gasses and CFC-gasses, plus a series of requirements which are beneficial to a refrigerants abilities. We have examined different theoretical refrigerator models, to obtain an insight into which properties a refrigerant should have to function in a refrigerator. We have examined a series of gasses, such as hydrocarbons, CO2 and ammonia, regarding the requirements, but we have not found any alternatives. Even though the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) refrigerants have problems with toxicity, flammability or climate changes, are these, the day today, the best alternatives.
