This paper seeks to examine the experience of loneliness for two male graduate students at Roskilde University based on Axel Honneth and Irvin Yalom’s psychological theories. Furthermore, this paper examines the students way of dealing with their feeling of loneliness and how to avoid it. Honneth takes a critical theoretical approach as his starting point and Yalom has an existential psychological approach.
It is concluded that, with the use of Honneth’s notion about recognition, loneliness is experienced as an insufficiency of recognition from close relations in their private life, a feeling of social invisibility and as an interpersonal isolation. From Yalom’s point of view, this project also found that loneliness is experienced as an inner existential realization consisting of being alone, an intrapersonal isolation and a fear of separation.
In conclusion, our interviewees’ feeling of loneliness, can be understood with both Honneth and Yalom’s theoretical perspectives of recognition and isolation, to provide a broader understanding of the phenomena, loneliness.
