In this project, we study waste separation in two selected backyards in the municipality of Copenhagen based on the problem formulation: Which factors are crucial for improvements of waste separation in Copenhagen backyards? In this connection, both the behavior of the citizen and the surrounding waste system of which the citizen is a part of is examined. In order to identify and characterize important factors for waste separation, Frank W. Geel’s theory on socio-technical systems, Anthony Giddens’ theory of structuration and John Thøgersen’s model for behavior are included in the examination. These theories deal with the dualism of structure and agency which we argue that it is relevant to work with, in order to understand waste separation. The theories are used in interaction with our empirical research in the form of five qualitative interviews. The conclusion shows that crucial factors for waste separation are among others: Social relations, obligations, the caretaker, possibilities and information. We can deduct from this study that the citizen has a possibility of improving waste separation within the system through change of behavior whereas it will be difficult to obtain an improvement of waste separation through a change of the entire socio-technical system. Based on our study, we are therefore able to argue that improvement of waste separation needs locally rooted initiatives.
