This thesis is focusing on the diagnosis ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) from a social constructionistic and poststructuralistic point of view. These particular traditions, or theories of science, contribute to the concept that mental illness and diagnoses can be understood as social and linguistic constructed phenomenon. I am using Michel Foucault´s discourse theory -archaeological analytical strategy, and his term governmentality to examine the power structures within discourses and practices in society. From this point of view I exam the psychiatric practice´s description of this diagnosis ADHD and the position of power and child view, this discourse produces. To provide another discourse, another story to the debate about ADHD, I use the systemic family therapeutic discourse, which focuses on problems as discursively and linguistic constructed. Behavioral problems are seen as circular and relational issues, and not as a biological and neurological flaw inside the individual. It is the construction of the problem, of a diagnosis, that is located as the problem from a systemic point of view. And the mission is to provide with more resourceful stories in relation to the child. Knowledge and methods is not based on nature scientific and objective principles in this systemic discourse. This divergence as to what constitutes valid knowledge further deepens the gap between the discourses’ definitions of objects and positions of subjects and the relation between these. It also deepens the gap in their praxis, which is based on the relation between object and subject.
