Abstrakt

The European Union has been faced with a large multitude of challenges – especially in recent times.
One of which regards the perceived democratic and legitimistic deficiency of the European Union.
The need for the Union to connect itself with the European-public through accountable procedures
of democratic and legitimistic initiatives has never been so imperative. This thesis will uncover the
extent of which the European “Spitzenkandidaten” initiative has been successful in channeling
democratic legitimacy to the EU-level.
