Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project studies which discourse there is in the media about whether the project in Ørestaden is a fiasco or a success. The discussion contains two arguments, whether it should be a place for people with lots of apartments that have a reasonable price and that the area shall contain green areas. The other argument says that it shall be an expansion to the rest of Copenhagen and so that Copenhagen can compete with other countries by making space for big, international companies. Therefor making Ørestaden a business area. To find out which discourse there is in the media over a chosen period of ten years, the project contains six articles. The ten years is divided into three smaller periods, which contains two articles each. The meaning of this is to see how the discourse changes over the period. Each of these articles have been analysed by using theorists Michel Foucault, Ernesto Laclau and Mouffe and Norman Fairclough. Our method is discourse analysis and because of differences in the way the theorists analyse, the project contains two analyses. The first analysis contains Norman Fairclough and his way of using critical discourse analysis by describing how specific words can make sentences either positive or negative. The reason why a critical discourse will be used in this project is to see how the media uses words and sentences to make the reader believe in them. The other analysis contains both Ernesto Laclau and Mouffe, but also Michel Foucault, because they are pretty similar. The theory of Michel Foucault contains how power is obtained through knowledge. Michel Foucault theory says that an expert has naturally more power in a discussion of his field than a person with absolutely no knowledge about it, which this project will study whether the articles uses experts or not. The theory of Ernesto Laclau & Chantal Mouffe specifies a little more in how positive words can become negative if they are a part of a negative perspective. It is the same the other way around. The theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe does also look at the perspective of how arguments can be stronger than other arguments, for example by using an expert. The project will also use Jan Gehl as an expert in how cities are best furnished for the people. This project will use his theories about what a city shall be like. He will be used to back up the arguments in the papers, which says that Ørestaden is a fiasco.
