Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project examines the different perspectives on economic development, free trade and the economic developmental potential of trade agreements. This will be done through the views of modernization theory, structuralism and neoliberalism. Thereafter we analyze NAFTAs influence on the economic development of Mexico. The project shows that there is little agreement between the views of modernization theory, structuralism and neoliberalism, besides the fact that they all strive for economic development. The modernization theory was formed in the 1950’s and sees economic growth as the goal for economic development. Structuralism was launched as a criticism of the economic growth focus of the modernization theory and saw structural change in trade relations as the goal of economic development. The neoliberal approach to economic development was formed in the time after the 1982 debt Crisis and saw total liberalization as a means to economic development. Structuralism and neoliberalism will be used to discuss the economic potential of trade agreements. The two views on economic development does not concern trade agreements but the project will, through the structuralistic and neoliberalistic view on free trade, two theories on trade agreements and two types of trade agreements seek to bring fort the view on trade agreements. Finally the project analyses NAFTAs influence on the economic development of Mexico. This is done by looking at some of the areas viewed as important indicators for economic development from a structuralistic point of view. This is done because the NAFTA trade agreement is a liberalization measures. The results will throughout the analyze be discussed through the views structuralistic and neoliberalistic. The project concludes that the economic development potential of trade agreements is dependents on their form and the willingness of the countries signing the agreement. to work for an agreement beneficial for all members. The project also concludes that NAFTAs influence on the economic development of Mexico has been negative and that factors besides NAFTA have influence on the economic development of Mexico.
