You Need Guidance? On the benefits and challenges of ethical guidelines on AI used to detect (neuro-)doping fraud in sport

Abstract

The point of departure for this chapter is the use of AI to improve the detection rate of (neuro) doping fraud. However, its use raises some ethical challenges concerning, e.g., misuse or violation of privacy. One way of dealing with these ethical issues is to apply ethical guidelines in the moral evaluation of the use of AI. One example of this way of dealing with this issue is the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI. According to these guidelines, the use of AI should comply with ethical principles such as accuracy, respect for autonomy and privacy, prevention of harm, non-discrimination and transparency. However, one important challenge with this strategy is that there can be conflicts between the values embedded in the ethical guidelines for AI. In dealing with such value conflicts this chapter critically discusses four different strategies. The four strategies are metaethical cognitivism, the ranking view, value monism and "the acceptance of conflict view". The main aim of the chapter is to criticise the first three mentioned strategies and argue that the latter mentioned strategy is a better "solution" to value conflicts. Although the acceptance of conflict view also faces both epistemic and practical problems.
