title = "Why wear a headscarf in parliament? Danish secularist, nationalist and feminist ideas about Muslims",
abstract = "The chapter analyses the critique that the headscarf-wearing candidate Asmaa Abdol-Hamid met due to her headscarf. The chapter employs a critical discourse analytical approach and focuses on opinions published in the five major Danish daily newspapers. The chapter shows that a feminist critique, in particular, formed a challenge to the legitimacy of her candidature. Further, it is illustrated how Asmaa Abdol-Hamid herself defended her aim of becoming an MP by a multiculturalist feminist discourse. By her discourse, she also aimed to counter secularist and nationalist critique. The findings of the chapter are placed in perspective by a discussion about the possible reasons why Asmaa Abdol-Hamid became an object of critique.",
