Abstract
Much os the most thorough nthropological research that deals with totemism in West Africa suggests that totem practices contain a representation of social values as well as continuing negotiations and interpretations of
these values. This helps totemic practices to survive as social institutions in the region. In this article, the author proposes that we may situate this research in relation to a study of Burkinabè traditional tales and the novels Crépuscule des temps anciens (1962) by Nazi Boni and La Traversée nocturne
(2004) by Isaac Bazié in order to demonstrate how literary narratives may contribute to a better
understanding of the complexity of such negotiations and interpretations.
