This article presents the output from the cross cutting component on education in the research project entitled Youth and the City: Skills, Knowledge and Social Reproduction. The article presents ethnographic data collected in secondary schools in Recife/Brazil, Lusaka/Zambia and Hanoi/Vietnam and discusses methodological challenges in ethnographic and comparative education. Particular focus is on the interaction between education policy reform, classroom practices and young people's negotiation of self and future in a changing world.
