Abstract

This chapter raises a critical approach to central aspects of design that is only to a limited extend used within the field of Social Entrepreneurship. Departing from an argument of the necessity of mutual learning and embodied ethics to be able to design for social sustainability, the chapter applies concepts from the field of social design and is tapping into related concepts of pluriverse of knowledges, embodied ethics, concepts of power and vulnerability. It is done through the lenses of a social entrepreneurship teaching context in Denmark where students engage with external stakeholders to collaborate around solving mutually defined social sustainability problems. The chapter presents an analysis of how the embodied learning and ethics of the designer is of central importance when designing for social sustainability and change as it affects power dynamics and ways of participation in the design process. Thus, it gives insights into teachings in Social Entrepreneurship bringing into perspective how the role of the social entrepreneur is to be encountered as interactional and embodied, including the designer in the definition of learning and participation in the social change process. The chapter contributes with suggestions for tangible design principles for social sustainability.
