Abstract

Although the anthropology of borders is a relatively recent subfield of political anthropology, it has not ceased to grow ever since the 1990s. In this chapter we will outline some main themes and perspectives emerging from the anthropological scholarship on borders. We will argue that borders not only frame and contain the territorial integrity of states, but also that the cultural and historical formation of borders is essential to understand how states think, behave and act.
