Abstract

More than 700 000 Europeans and 800 000 Americans live with astoma. Stoma-related morbidity is common1; one-third of stomasare reported as being problematic within 3 weeks of surgery2 andthe overall incidence of stoma-related complications is 26.5(range 2–100) per cent3. Stoma-related complications arise mainlyfrom patient factors and surgical technique2. Although mostpatient factors are not readily modifiable, focus on surgicaltechnique can optimize outcomes for the patient. This article, written from a stoma nurse’s perspective, points to patientpreparation and stoma construction as being important for thepatient’s management of the stoma.
