Abstract
In the following, we first identify the field of online communication research and
place our contribution within it. Then we present five distinct empirical features which
we believe are determining of online communication: features that point to the need for both theoretical discontinuity and reconnection. The article then goes on to address the question of how online communication can be understood. We propose that this form of communication may most fruitfully be understood in terms of a collaborative paradigm, in which communication is explained as an ongoing process that is determined by the willingness to participate in and the ability to invite to collaboration. Finally, we look into the implications that the collaborative approach to online communication may have for future research and practice.
