Abstract

This paper is the second paper of two, in which the climate adaptation solutions taken by Danish DK2020 municipalities are being addressed.

The first paper “Assessment of achievements and future needs of Danish municipalities’ climate adaptation work reported in DK2020 evaluation reports - A literature review” focused on a review of various evaluation reports addressing the achievements of the DK2020 initiatives. The condensed conclusion of this paper, as far as request for technology and innovation needs, revealed the following areas of interests:

o “Enhanced flood defenses are crucial, requiring improved dikes, sea walls, and storm surge barriers to combat rising sea levels and increased storm surges.

o Utilizing NBS like wetland restoration and green infrastructure, including urban green spaces, green roofs, and permeable pavements, being essential for managing flood risks, stormwater, and mitigating urban heat island effects.

o Updated building codes must ensure structures withstand extreme weather events.

o Integrated water management systems need comprehensive solutions for water cycle management, including advanced water storage and efficient irrigation systems to address drought conditions.

o Erosion control measures, using new techniques and retaining walls, are vital for protecting vulnerable areas.

o Investing in advanced water technologies for recycling and storage will ensure efficient water resource management and prevent saltwater intrusion” (Lybæk & Grindsted, 2024).

In the present review, we focus on Region Zealand and Region South to, more specifically, identify request for technology and innovation needs within the two regions’ municipalities. Thus, the purpose of the study is to give some indications of request for technology and innovation needs within the program regions from what is being expressed in the DK2020 municipal plans etc. In the discussion section, we finally bring in additional knowledge, to supplement the themes identified, from an expert interview conducted
