Abstract

Artiklen viser den praktiske udfoldelse af en livshistorisk metode i et større empirisk projekt om ansættelsesevne. Diskursen om beskæftigelsesegnethed, der ser arbejderen som en universelt tilpasningsdygtig arbejdsstyrke, kontekstualiseres historisk i en sen fase af kapitalistisk modernisering. En kritisk diskussion af det herskende koncept om kompetence til at forsømme den subjektive dimension af læring og kompetenceudvikling fører til metodologiske overvejelser og beslutninger, der træffes i udformningen af dette forskningsprojekt, dets forskningsspørgsmål, dets teoretiske forståelse og metodevalg. Fortællende livshistorier skal belyse arbejdernes oplevelser af væsentlige skift i deres karriere og den kompetenceudvikling, de har oplevet i sådanne situationer. Artiklen forudser, hvordan en psykosamfundsmæssig fortolkning af livshistorier kan give værdifuld indsigt i den subjektive dimension af kompetenceudvikling i sammenhæng med arbejdernes liv som helhed
