    Abstract

Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) have been widely used for healing of different health problems for thousands of years. They have been used as therapeutic, complementary and alternative medicines. TCMs usually consist of dozens to hundreds of various compounds, which are extracted from raw herbal sources by aqueous or alcoholic solvents. Therefore, it is difficult to correlate the pharmaceutical effect to a specific lead compound in the TCMs. A detailed analysis of various components in TCMs has been a great challenge for modern analytical techniques in recent decades. In this chapter, some of the major analytical methods, with a focus on HPLC-MS and NMR, will be reviewed for their applications in the field of TCMs analysis. HPLC-MS is a method of high sensitivity for separation of complex constituents and their structure characterization, highly efficient for the analysis of TCMs samples. NMR, on the other hand, provides not only information of primary structures but also information of higher order structures, complementing the components structure analysis by HPLC-MS. The most recent progress in the analysis of the commonly used TCMs will be summarized
